Suitable viscosity (or plasticity) of the adhesive is the basic condition for mixing and processing. Too large or too small viscosity is not conducive to the processing process. The viscosity of the compound can usually be adjusted by choosing the type of raw glue, the degree of plasticizing, and the addition of softeners and fillers. The addition of filler can increase the viscosity of the compound. The particle size and structure of carbon black have obvious effects on the viscosity, and the structural effect is the most significant. The order of action of various fillers on increasing viscosity is as follows: tank carbon black > acetylene carbon black > clay > magnesium oxide > furnace carbon black > barium sulfate > zinc oxide > calcium carbonate > hot cracking carbon black. With the increase of the amount of filler, the viscosity of the adhesive increases correspondingly. Adding softener can generally reduce the viscosity of the compound, and the order of influence is: oleic acid > pine tar > stearic acid > rosin > asphalt > vegetable oil > mineral oil.
